Headache, Tired, Depressed? You May Be Dehydrated
Over 340 million people worldwide suffer from some form of depression. It can be a very debilitating illness that affects many areas of your life. When a person is depressed, not only is everyday life a struggle, but their friends and loved ones are also affected by the disease.
Depression can have many symptoms including: headaches, appetite changes, insomnia and feelings of emptiness and thoughts of suicide. If anyone who is feeling depressed should talk to a professional as soon as possible; however, sometimes mild depression can actually be linked to dehydration. When you are dehydrated, it means that your body is suffering from lack of fluids. In fact, by the time you feel thirsty, you are already in the very early stages of dehydration. Sometimes it is the result of loss of fluid due to sweating, illness or simply not drinking enough water. You should make it your goal to drink enough water throughout the day so that you never feel thirsty at all.
Since over 80% of brain tissue is made out of water, it is a good idea to keep your body hydrated. Think about what happens when you are feeling thirsty: your mouth and throat feel dry, it can be difficult to swallow and all you can think about is finding something to wet your whistle. Well just imagine what is happening to your brain when you are dehydrated. When our bodies are properly hydrated, feelings of anxiety, nervousness and feeling depressed are less prevalent. As a result, some feelings of mild depression can actually be quenched by drinking water.
The electrical waves in our brains thrive off the water that we drink. When we drink enough water, our brains function more effectively and we feel happier and less depressed. When you feel yourself getting anxious or you feel imbalanced, reach for a glass of water and allow your body to balance itself.
While it is important to drink at least 8-10 eight ounce glasses of water per day, it is crucial that you don’t overdo it and drink too much water. It may sound funny, but even drinking water should be done in moderation. It is best to ask your doctor how much water you should drink daily for optimal brain health and to fight those feelings of being depressed.
Water is the best option to hydrate yourself. Adding electrolytes can improve taste and hydration further. Alcoholic and caffeinated drinks are not suitable substitutes because they are diuretics and will only make you more dehydrated. If you are in a situation where you will be sweating a lot such as while exercising, it is a good idea to drink plenty of water before, during and after. Hopefully, these tips will keep you properly hydrated and on the road to happiness.
